Providing Independent Advocacy Support to individuals, groups of people, families and children

The first meeting of took place in August 2002 and was held under the auspices of Stockport Cerebral Palsy Society, an organisation providing services for people with learning disabilities. In November 2002 an independent advocacy project was created, building on the work of a previous advocacy project that had been administered under the umbrella of Stockport Cerebral Palsy Society. This move was intended to minimise 'conflict of interest' situations between a particular individual and the interests of someone else, or organisation.
Other key principles , which Stockport Total Advocacy endeavours to adhere to are:-
- To continue to be independent from service providers
- To be managed by an independent management committee
- To seek partners from diverse backgrounds, not rely on referrals
- That our citizen advocates develop one-
to- one parnerships with people with learning difficulties and/or other vulnerable people - That our citizen advocates should be people who are independent of service providers

Our Mission
To support (via a range of appropriate means) individuals and groups of people who are at risk of social exclusion and/or abuse, to make their views known and for those views to be acknowledged and valued by society and its institutions.
The Trust's objectives are
1. To provide independent advocacy support to individuals, groups of people, families and children in vulnerable and necessitous circumstances within the Stockport Borough Council area.
This will be done by
- Recruiting and supporting volunteer advocates
- Providing practical support on either a one-
to- one basis, or group support - Providing emotional support and on-
going friendship, where appropriate
2. To engage with agencies nd other organisations to address the needs of individuals
who are vulnerable from within the Stockport post code area.
This will be done by
- Providing staff and volunteers with knowledge of relevant local, regional and national legislation, guidance, policies and procedures
- Providing support to volunteer advocates in an appropriate manner
- Providing training at a local, regional and national level
3. To perform such other acts and activities that will further our charitable aims
by a range of appropriate means.
This will be done by
- Recruiting and employing appropriately qualified staff with a broad range of experience in developing individual rights
- Continuing to build upon our extensive pool of voluntary, professional and materialistic resources which we access in accordance with our policies and procedures
- Networking with appropriate agencies within the statutory and voluntary sectors at local and regional level
- Developing and updating all relevant policies and procedures
